Reality checks & fixes

Your booked lodging locks the backbone of the route. These are the three spots where the plan is tight or overloaded β€” with a recommended fix for each.

Day 4Estes Park β†’ West Yellowstone is ~11 hours, not 10

The single longest leg of the trip: ~638 mi / ~11 hr. A sunrise hike plus this drive is not realistic. Fix: do a quick Bear/Sprague Lake sunrise, be rolling by 08:00, treat the rest as a transit day, and break at Rawlins or Lander, WY. Arriving West Yellowstone after dark is expected.

Day 8Grand Teton β†’ Carbondale is a genuine ~8.5-hour push

~465 mi / ~8.5 hr via US-191 south. Fix: Moulton Barn sunrise, a fast Signal Mountain / Moose-Wilson moose loop, then on the road by ~09:30. Fuel + food stops at Pinedale and Rock Springs.

Day 18Cathedral Valley + Hanksville β†’ Denver is too much for one day (and unbooked)

Temple of the Sun is a half-day rough 4Γ—4 loop with a Fremont River ford; Hanksville β†’ Denver is ~402 mi / ~6.5 hr. Both, plus outlet shopping, is a 10–12 hr day right before an international flight. Fix: skip Cathedral Valley (or do only a first-light Factory Butte), then drive straight to Denver and book a hotel near DEN / Denver Premium Outlets tonight β€” this is the one night still unreserved.

WeatherHigh passes β€” the 5-year closure record (lower risk than it sounds)

Independence Pass (Oct 1): its winter closure fell Oct 28–Nov 17 every year 2021–25 (earliest Oct 28) β€” well after your visit, so a seasonal closure is unlikely. The only real exposure is a 1–3 day storm closure (e.g. Oct 11–13, 2023). Fallback: I-70/Leadville. Ophir Pass (Oct 5) is higher-risk β€” an unmaintained 4Γ—4 road that's first to go with any snow; summit before noon, fallback Hwy 145. Check cotrip.org + San Miguel County each morning.

Trip logistics

Park Pass

Buy the America the Beautiful annual pass (~$80, or $250 non-resident annual per your sheet) β€” covers Rocky Mtn, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Arches, Canyonlands. Dead Horse Point ($20) is a Utah state park, not covered.

Timed Entry

RMNP needs a "Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road" permit 05:00–18:00 (recreation.gov, $2). Maroon Bells needs a parking/shuttle reservation β€” already grabbed for Oct 1 ($2.42). Arches dropped timed entry for 2026.

Vehicle

4Γ—4 high-clearance is required for Crystal Mill, Ophir Pass, Cathedral Valley (Temple of the Sun), Bentonite Hills & Factory Butte tracks. Rental ~$1,366.

Weather & Passes

Snow possible on any high pass after Oct 1. Check cotrip.org (CO) and udottraffic.utah.gov (UT) each morning.

Foliage Tracker

Time the aspens week-by-week with the Fall Foliage prediction map. High elevations turn first; valleys last.

No Cell Signal

Dead zones: Ophir Pass, Last Dollar Rd, Bentonite Hills, Factory Butte, Cathedral Valley. Download offline Google Maps + Gaia GPS before each desert / pass day.

Altitude

Denver 5,280 ft; Maroon Bells 9,600 ft; Independence Pass 12,095 ft; Trail Ridge Rd >12,000 ft. Day 1–2 near Denver/Estes eases the transition β€” hydrate, go easy the first night.

Elk Rut

Late Sep is peak bugling season. Moraine Park (RMNP), Yellowstone's river meadows, and Gros Ventre (Tetons) are prime at dawn/dusk β€” bring the 70–200 or longer.

Gear

Ultra-wide for canyons/arches, 24–70 walkaround, 70–200 for Teton compression & wildlife. Polarizer + ND essential; tripod for every sunrise/sunset. Drones OK on BLM (Factory Butte) but banned in all National Parks.
